A Family Dollar employee challenged a robber’s threat of a gun on Wednesday, causing the robber to panic and flee the store.

The robber, described as a man in his early 20s, entered the Hawkins Plaza Shopping Center store in Akron at about 1:30 p.m. with his hand in his pocket, as if he had a gun. Police said the man shouted: “You have 10 seconds or I’ll shoot you!”

A clerk already had a cash drawer open and handed it to the robber. Meanwhile, another clerk grabbed at the robber’s pocket to feel for a gun. The suspect panicked and dropped the cash drawer, police reported. He picked up some of the money that spilled onto the floor and fled eastbound toward Vernon Odom Boulevard.

The man is described as black, standing at about 5 foot 4 and weighing about 130 pounds. He wore a black stocking cap with snowflakes, a red hooded sweatshirt, a white T-shirt and blue jeans.

Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at 330-375-2490.
