Russell Township in Geauga County tops the National Council for Home Safety and Security’s list of the Top 50 Safest Cities in Ohio, which includes several Akron-area communities.

The Washington, D.C.-based group released its 2017 rankings this month, basing them on FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics and its own research. The national trade association examined only communities with populations above 5,000.

The council was complimentary about Russell, calling it a “classic Middle American town — people remember your name and keep an eye out for funny business. Perhaps that’s why it’s also the safest town in a state full of them — Russell Township experienced a mere nine reported property crimes and one violent crime last year.”

Hinckley Township in the number six spot and Hudson at eighth were the only Akron-area communities in the top 10. Other area towns on the list are: Sagamore Hills Township (15th), Aurora (19th), Brunswick (26th), Munroe Falls (33rd), Orrville (39th), Twinsburg (41st) and Lawrence Township (44th).

The rest of the top five in Ohio, in order, were: Chester Township, Dover, Bay Village and Bellevue.
