Garrett Haverstick set the tone from the very start in Ellet’s 35-0 victory over visiting Garfield in a City Series game Thursday night.
Haverstick, a senior quarterback, completed 9-of-15 passes for 119 yards and three touchdowns passes — two from at least 20 yards out — in the first half to help power the Orangemen (5-0, 1-0) to a commanding 21-0 lead at the break.
Marquise Bridges added two 1-yard touchdown runs in the second half and finished the game with 130 yards on 25 carries for Ellet, which travels to Green to take on the Bulldogs in a nonconference game Sept. 30. Bridges also caught a pass for 15 yards.
The game was delayed with 44 seconds remaining in the third quarter after an injury to a Garfield player. The injury, one of several in the contest, forced a stoppage of about 30 minutes to allow a second ambulance to arrive to take the injured player to the hospital.
Ellet opened the scoring in the first quarter when Haverstick hit junior Tyler Hughes from 10 yards out.
In the second quarter, Haverstick connected with senior Cameron Brake (25 yards) and senior Jackson Pemberton (46 yards) as the Orangemen pulled away.
The Orangemen have been dominant in every game so far this season, with a 34.2-point scoring differential through five games, including an 83-26 win over Kenmore last week.
Thursday was more of the same, as Ellet dominated in first downs (17-5), rushing yards (191-40), passing yards (191-0) and total yards (382-40).
Garfield attempted just two passes and didn’t complete either one.
The loss was the third in a row for the Rams (1-4, 0-2), who have yet to play a game on their home field.
Garfield will travel to North next Friday.
